Cook County Assessor Announces Temporary Suspension of Reassessment Notices and Filing Deadlines

Coronavirus K-12 Education

Yesterday, Cook County Assessor Fritz Kaegi announced a temporary suspension of reassessment notices and filing deadlines. This follows the Assessor’s closing his office to the public on March 13, 2020 in light of the growing threat and societal change occasioned by the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) situation.  You can read the Assessor’s press release here.

For 2020 the Assessor is reassessing townships in the south and southwest suburbs of Cook County. To date he has released reassessment notices for the following south suburban townships: River Forest, Riverside, Oak Park, and Palos Townships. There are 13 additional south suburban townships that are now on hold. The Cook County Board of Review also recently closed to the public and is now conducting hearings by phone and via electronic submission as it wraps up its 2019 assessment review process. The current thinking is that Cook County tax bills will still be mailed in time for  an August 1 payment deadline. Collar county boards of review concluded their review process in the past few weeks.

We will continue to monitor the changes occasioned by COVID-19 as they affect Illinois school districts and the property tax assessment and collection process and bring you more information as it becomes available.
