Educational Equity Webinar Series: Addressing Disproportionality and Increasing Equity and Inclusion

Thursday, June 10 at 12 P.M.

This month our Educational Equity webinar will discuss special education, specifically disproportionality related to the identification of students with disabilities, placement of students in restrictive settings, and exclusionary discipline of students with disabilities. We are pleased to have with us Cheryl Caesar, Assistant Director of Diverse Learners at Waukegan Community Unit School District 60; Jeremy Duffy, Senior Legal Compliance Officer also at Waukegan School District; and Dr. Jennifer Sterpin, Director of Special Education for Lake Forest High School District 115. Kendra Yoch and Amy Dickerson will serve as moderators. Special education has a relatively unique legal requirement obligating school districts to review data related to student race and ethnicity and take steps to address significant disproportionalities. In this session, we will look at steps districts can take to prevent and minimize disproportionality, including strengthening MTSS, staff training, inclusive placement practices, and restorative disciplinary practices.
