Our attorneys frequently serve as “external investigators” for institutions seeking expert and unbiased investigation of serious internal allegations. We strive to evaluate complaints promptly, thoroughly, and fairly, while minimizing disruption to work and relationships within the educational institution. In the process, we help education institutions fulfill their legal obligation to investigate harassment and other serious allegations, and we also help resolve politically sensitive claims of fraud or malfeasance implicating board members or senior administration. We are trained and experienced in investigation techniques and know how to advise senior leadership effectively and discretely.
When appropriate, we help our clients engage neutral, outside investigators to advise governing boards and administrators, and we work with those investigators to design investigative protocols that maintain privilege and promote an effective investigation.
Our specific investigative experience includes allegations of sexual and race harassment by senior administrators, violations of Internal Review Board procedures, resume fraud, financial mismanagement made by several members of a presidential cabinet, breach of confidentiality in connection with academic misconduct proceedings, faculty complaints of alleged gender-based pay inequities, “whistleblower” claims, and violations of the False Claims Act.
