Jeff Nowak was quoted in The Des Moines Register on July 1 in the article, “New state worker mandate: Report your aliments.” The article addresses a new requirement that Iowa’s state government employees report their prescriptions and medical services to a private company—the Reed Group—that will monitor their absences has prompted at least three union complaints and questions about privacy.

On August 25, 2009, Franczek Radelet attorneys successfully obtained a temporary restraining order on behalf of Argo Community High School District No. 217 and Indian Springs School District No. 109. The order allows approximately 260 students to board school buses from safe locations near their homes within the apartment complex, rather than at a bus stop on a busy, industrial street.

After more than a decade of litigation, the Champaign Community Unit School District No. 4 Board of Education in Champaign, IL approved a Settlement Agreement that ended a voluntary federal Consent Decree. The decree stems from complaints filed with the Office of Civil Rights by African-American Plaintiffs in 1996, which alleged racial discrimination.

Franczek Radelet secured a jury trial victory on behalf of the University of Chicago in the matter of Vernon v. University of Chicago. Following a nine-day trial, a Chicago jury returned a verdict in favor of the University, which was represented by Franczek Radelet & Rose attorneys Jeff Nowak and Bill Pokorny.
Upon the conclusion of the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2007-2008 term, Franczek Radelet compiled a Review of the Supreme Court’s 2007-2008 Term which highlights the important labor and employment cases the Court analyzed this past term and will consider in its upcoming term.

In reaching its decision, the court once again reinforced that in order for an employer to be liable for coworker harassment, the employer must have knowledge of the harassment. The court found that Bernier's anonymous instant message to the alleged harasser (a co-worker) was insufficient to put the company on notice for the purpose of imputing liability.

Like any good Irish politician born on the South Side, Deborah Lynch knows the names and stories of many of the teachers, school clerks and other union delegates who pass by her at the entrance of the union hall on West Washington Boulevard.
