Rising College Costs Threaten Access to Higher Education
December 9, 2008
As reported by The New York Times and The Washington Post, The National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education recently released the report “Measuring Up 2008,” comparing net college costs (tuition, fees, room and board, minus financial aid) against median family income. The report found the share of income required to pay for college has grown for lower-income and middle income families, placing doubt on whether college enrollment will continue to rise. The report shows that other countries are outpacing the United States in providing access to college education, and gives a failing grade for college affordability to every state except California.
