Washington Post: Montgomery County School District Estimates Employees' Agreement to Forgo 5% in Raises Will Save $89 Million in Revenue
December 9, 2008
For the first time since 1990, leaders of four employee associations, representing more than 22,000 workers in Montgomery County, agreed to forgo the 5% contractual pay raises all workers would have received in the fiscal year that begins in July, totaling more than $89 million in savings to the District. Superintendent Jerry D. Weast said he and other top administrators in Maryland's largest school system would also lose annual raises. School board President Nancy Navarro credited unions with "tremendous sacrifice during these tough times."
