Washington Post Reports that Worsening Budget Conditions May Force Schools to Increase Class Sizes
December 9, 2008
The story examines how school districts in Montgomery County, Maryland, Fairfax County, Virginia, and Los Angeles, California all are considering increasing class size as a result of budget pressures caused by the current economic downturn. It notes that a survey of more than 800 districts released last month by the American Association of School Administrators found that 36 percent of those school districts have moved to larger classes in response to the economic downturn. This represents a change in policy after many years of declining class sizes. The report notes that while there is no magic number for class size, individual attention is a key component of a quality education.
