New Administration's Influence Over Courts Likely Greatest at Appellate, District Court Level

While commentators often focus on Supreme Court nominations, the reality is that the high court accepts fewer than 100 new cases each year.  The vast majority of federal cases are decided in the district and appellate courts, and it is there that the power shift in Washington will likely have the strongest effect.  Two Washington Post articles which analyze the effect of GOP-appointed majorities in the federal courts and the changes likely to occur under the Obama administration detail the potential impact of this shift.
