Josephson Institute Releases Report on Ethics of High School Students
December 2, 2008
The report, titled The Ethics of American Youth - 2008 summary, surveyed nearly 30,000 American high school students. Most interestingly, 64% of the students reported cheating in school during the past year. Students attending non-religious independent schools reported the lowest cheating rate (47%) while 63% of students from religious schools cheated. Responses about cheating show some geographic disparity: Seventy percent of the students residing in the southeastern U.S. admitted to cheating, compared to 64% in the west, 63% in the northeast, and 59% in the Midwest. More than one in three (36%) said they used the Internet to plagiarize an assignment. In 2006 the figure was 33 percent.
