New Jersey Requires More Training for "Alternate Route" Teachers
November 25, 2008
The New Jersey State Board of Education recently increased the training requirements for thousands of “alternate route” teachers coming into their classrooms as a second career. In addition to the previous requirements of taking 200 hours of training and working alongside veteran teachers in their first months, new alternate route teachers will now be required to take 24 hours of training in classroom management and other pedagogy skills before their first day in the classroom. Teachers going into elementary schools will also need an additional 90 hours for specific training in how to teach reading and math. These new requirements are part of a package of changes in New Jersey seeking to alter how all new teachers are trained and certified, and heighten the standards new teachers must follow once on the job.
