With Obama, Unions See Chance to Push Agenda

Share

November 25, 2008

The Washington Post contends that federal employees are looking forward to the Obama administration with great anticipation.  The federal employees’ unions reportedly see the change in power in Washington as a chance to cash in on goodwill that unions built during Obama's campaign.

The National Treasure Employees Union, which represents 31 agencies across the federal government and claims to represent (not to be confused with membership) 150,000 workers, has provided the Obama transition team with a set of administrative and legislative recommendations that would boost organized labor’s power under federal legislation.

Among labor’s main objectives are to grant more employees collective bargaining rights and to encourage Obama to issue an executive order reestablishing the labor-management partnership that President Clinton created.  Unions also desire that the new administration reduce the hiring of outside contractors to do work they feel should be done by federal employees.
