Stimulus Bill Provisions Aid Workers, Unemployed
February 17, 2009
As summarized in articles reported in The New York Times here and here, and on STLtoday.com, several provisions in the federal economic stimulus bill target the jobless and aim to aid workers during this economic downturn. The bill adds $25 per week to current unemployment compensation benefits, continues extended unemployment benefits for the long-term unemployed through 2009, and seeks to encourage states to expand unemployment insurance coverage over time. The bill also provides a subsidy for COBRA benefits, under which the federal government will offer premium subsidies covering 65% of the cost of COBRA for up to nine months.
