AFT Makes Recommendations for School Infrastructure Improvements
January 20, 2009
The American Federation of Teachers, the Building and Construction Trades Department, and the AFL-CIO have partnered in a national "Building Minds, Minding Buildings" campaign. The campaign recently issued a report outlining the current school infrastructure needs throughout the country and their recommendations for improving school building conditions. The report estimates the school infrastructure need throughout the country to be at approximately $254.6 billion, and details the specific need in all 50 states. Illinois' current need is $8.2 billion. The report also discusses recent court decisions dealing with school infrastructure issues, and makes specific policy recommendations for concerted and immediate action to be taken at the federal, state, and local levels to improve school facilities throughout the nation.
