School Districts Nationwide See Increase in Student Homelessness
January 13, 2009
A recent survey of more than 1700 school districts conducted in the fall of 2008 by the National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth and First Focus found that the number of homeless students has increased significantly in school districts across the country. For example, over 450 school districts surveyed saw at least a 25% increase in the number of homeless students from the 2006-2007 school year to the 2007-2008 school year. Chicago Public Radio reports that Illinois’ homeless student population has increased by 18% over last year, and Chicago Public Schools’ homeless student population has increased by one-third.
